It is said that Gauguin was inspired by the culture and landscape of Brittany, and wore these clogs, even in Paris. Carved with images of Breton women and geese, and signed on one shoe, the clogs are clearly considered works of art.

The British sculptorAnish Kapoor has asked for museums and galleries all over the world to close for one day in protest and condemned China for imprisoning the artist Ai Weiwei

As an outspoken critic of the Chinese government Weiewei has not been heard from since he was arrested at Beijing airport on April 3.

“Barbaric” was the way Kapoor described China’s actions and said that “the failure of the international community to do more than voice concern was ridiculous”.

Turner Prize-winner Kapoor called for the art world to “come together” and do more to campaign for Ai’s release.

On BBC Radio 4’s Today programme Kapoor said: “As artists we have a communal voice and it’s important that we stick together.

He is said by family and friends to being targeted for his repeated assaults on what he calls China’s “totalitarian” one–party State.

The Tate Modern has just finished showing his work Sunflower Seeds and although the artist is still detained two major exhibitions of Ai’s’ work will open in London this week, one at Somerset House and one at The Lisson Gallery.
